Five Sails
1988–2009
Some stories begin long before we understand them.
Before the work…
Before the words…
Before the path revealed itself…
There was a place
And there was a horse.
Five Sails.
A name I had already been living inside—
without yet knowing why.
The Spirit Garden is a place of remembrance and meaning. Here we honor the horses who have shaped our lives—not only for who they were, but for what they taught. Each horse carries a quiet legacy—lessons of trust, courage, patience, and connection—that continue to guide us and can be shared with the next generation. This is a space to pause, remember, and recognize the wisdom they leave behind.

Five Sails was not an easy horse.
Strong-willed and deeply independent, he often refused to move forward unless something deeper was present — clarity, patience, and trust. Even simple moments became lessons.
There were days when walking out of the parking lot took time, persistence, and a willingness to stay with him instead of pushing through him.
He came from a powerful lineage, carrying the spirit of horses known for their fire and determination. That strength did not make him difficult without reason — it made him a teacher.
At one point, it was suggested that his story had reached its end. That he had already given enough. But that was never going to be the answer.
“We shall defy them all.”
With care, learning, and the courage to do things differently, Five Sails found his way forward. Not through force — but through relationship. Through patience. Through staying.
He reminds us that growth does not always look smooth. That strength can be quiet. And that sometimes, the greatest thing we can do is not give up on what others have already walked away from.
For those walking their own hard path — especially young people learning who they are — Five Sails teaches this:
You don’t have to move at someone else’s pace.
You don’t have to be easy to be worthy.
And you are never alone in learning how to find your way forward.

Some horses come into our lives quietly,
and leave behind something that never fades.
Through their presence, we learn patience,
trust, and the unspoken language of connection.
Every horse carries a story—
and within that story, a lesson waiting to be shared.

The bond between horse and human
is built in moments that cannot always be explained.
In stillness, in movement, in simply being together—there are lessons of courage, kindness, and understanding.
What they teach us does not end with them. It continues, carried forward.
